Five New Packaging Innovations 02

It looks like that 2010 will be a very fruitful year for development in packaging technology and design. I have an enormous number of innovations from all over the world in my files, for which I haven’t found time and space to research and write about. However a lot are so very interesting in terms of ideas for others, that I decided to collect the most interesting and put them on my blog in clusters of five.
So for the weeks to come you will find every few days a new article, titled: “Five New Packaging Innovations”. I’ll number the articles for easy reference.

From Spain – The Pizza Cone
Consumption habits are constantly changing and developing at the same rate as our fast-paced world. Ready-to-eat meals are growing in importance as are on-the-go snacks and lunches. They maybe fast, but still the consumer likes to enjoy a healthy, delicious and easy product during his breaks. According to ConeInn the answer is the pizza in a cone.
Pizza in a Cone. An innovative but simple concept for a new way of eating pizza. The microwaveable pizza from Spanish ConeInn World Corporation, is shaped in a cone format to be eaten as a convenient snack. It weighs 155g and has 65% filling and 35% mass.
For home use, the ConeInn pizza cone comes with a cardboard stand that allows for easy microwaving, taking only two to three minutes to cook, or, alternatively, in the oven for 20 minutes.
The sleeve features a susceptor with multiple temperature zones as well as venting. An opening feature allows the consumer to tear away the top of the sleeve leaving a holder for convenience. The packaging is supplied by Spanish Alzamora Packaging.

From Italy – Oneglass is ecological
Italian producer Oneglass Wine presents its stylishly packaged range of four wines in 100ml paper packets that weigh just 110g (10g when empty). The unbreakable, easy-to-use and easy-to-carry, foil-lined pocket-sized pack stands firm on a gusset base but is sealed flat at the neck making it easy to tear open and pour into a glass. Foil-lined packaging is ideal for maintaining the organoleptic characteristics of a wine even with a significant alcohol content.
The graphics, modern, clear and simple, target the young, image-conscious consumer. Shelf life is 12 months. According to the winery 100 ml is the right amount for tasting an excellent wine without having to open a bottle, with the risk of not finishing it.
Made of paper (75%), polyethylene (20%) and aluminium (5%), the Oneglass packaging can be flattened after use and can either be entirely recycled or used in an incinerator. The packaging supplier isn’t made known, but it looks like a material similar of the ones from Tetra Pak or SIG Combibloc.

From Scotland – Biscuits in PET
Based in Scotland, Border Biscuits Ltd markets its famous biscuits in an innovative PET-pack produced by German Seufert Transparente Verpackungen GmbH (STV). The carton carries an impressive six colour offset print, carefully designed with transparent areas to ensure the quality of the biscuit is displayed, emphasising the innovative flavours and traditional manufacturing methods.
The Klarfaltbox, made with STV’s patented Soft Crease (HF-process) technology, is fully machine erected, requiring particular expertise in PET manufacturing. The food compatible PET, low migration Inks and Soft crease technology, developed by STV, prove the high degree of innovation and technical capability, confirmed by BRC/IoP certification.
The Klarfaltbox is available in PET, PVC and PP material with material thicknesses from 150 – 450 my/microns.

From Germany – Groove Rock and Cool Shape – Church Sound
An exceptional CD-packaging. The packaging was to convey the comprehensive software package at a glance, convincing creative musicians to buy.
ChurchSound is distributed via a German and Austrian trade publisher, as well as by several specialised media providers relevant to the target group in German-speaking countries and the Internet. They wanted a functional packaging with ease-of-use, a high level of product protection through a “layered” design, while inserting the CD’s was to be quick and easy. Marketing were especially interested in a strong visual appeal to attract consumers’ attention. The product was to present itself as a “real experience”.

The slider cover opens to reveal the contents including a small booklet that is cleverly designed so that pages almost turn automatically. On the reverse two CD’s are inserted in a simple but effective way.
Offsetdruckerei Schwarzach created the final design, using Algro Design Duo 360 gm² paperboard from coated fine paper manufacturer Sappi. Algro Design Duo is a two-side double-coated paperboard. With its high whiteness and enhanced colour contrast, it is excellent for offset printing and has optimal runnability, die cutting, creasing and folding characteristics, due to structure and stiffness. It is suitable for embossing, hot foil stamping, spot varnishing and film lamination.

From the USA – The Cryovac Grip and Tear bag
The food supply chain remains a wasteful place. Although food packaging can extend the shelf life of fresh food for weeks, and reduce the amount of food lost during transport, at least 40% of the food produced globally is wasted. Recent USDA studies suggest that as much as 25% of food never makes it to a consumer’s plate.
According to its website, Sealed Air’s Cryovac brand delivers sustainability by reducing food waste across the supply chain. So they came up with the Cryovac Grip and Tear bag which combines the shrink, toughness and oxygen barrier properties of a traditional vacuum shrink bag with the addition of an easy-open feature. A user simply grips the package and tears it open by pulling a tab.
The bag’s knifeless design improves employee safety, reduces the risk of cross-contamination, eliminates mess, and keeps the workspace clean.
Sealed Air’s Cryovac brand introduced the first easy-open vacuum package for poultry, but the company states that it also is ideal for cook and strip roast beef, or ham operations
For processors, the Cryovac Grip & Tear bag does not require any new equipment investment and can be used with existing Cryovac rotary chamber vacuum systems.
