Narrow mouth – The finish of a container that is small in proportion to the diameter of the body.

Natural colour – Describes the translucent appearance of a plastic material that has not been coloured.

Natural Kraft – A durable strong form of paper that can be used as the outer substrate on bags and pouches. Gives a more natural feeling to the bag.

NatureFlex film

Natureworks LLC

NatureWorks PLA – Trademark of Natureworks LLC – Polylactic acid, a film made from corn instead of oil. PLA once placed in a commercial composting facility will decompose within 40 to 80 days, depending on the thickness of the original package. However, PLA is temperature sensitive and loses its thermoformed shape at temperatures of 115 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. PLA is on Wal-Mart’s preferred materials list.

NCR Paper – no carbon required.

Neck – The part of a container where the bottle cross-section “slenderises” to form the finish.

Neckbands

Needle-punching, Needling – Method of mechanically interlocking fibre webs by physically repositioning some of the fibres from a horizontal to a vertical orientation.

Rexam neptune_closureNeptune closure – Linerless tamper-evident closure ideal for still or mid pressure water and sparkling products.

Nestlé

News Vat Lined Chipboard – A combination boxboard made on a cylinder machine from chip and a news liner waste newspaper stock.
Newsprint – Standardized printing paper produced from mechanical pulp; grammage 40-52 g/m2.

Nip – Point where two rolls on the paper machine come in contact. It is the action of the two rollers coming together simultaneously against both sides of the paper that calenders and supercalenders the paper. An extended nip distributes the weight more evenly against the smoothing roller and imparts a greater degree of smoothness prior to the drying and calendering steps.

NIR Absorbing Dyes – A group of dyes which relieves heat-stress by selectively (more or less) absorbing radiation in the Near IR range.

NIR Radiation – The range of electromagnetic radiation from 800-2500nm which includes all the thermal portion of solar radiation.

NIR Reflecting Pigments – A group of pigments which relieve heat-stress by selectively (more or less) reflecting radiation in the Near IR range.

Nitrogen (liquid) – Nitrogen has no activity against bacteria. It increases shelf life substituting oxygen.

Nitrogen oxide (NOx) – Product of combustion from transportation and stationary sources and a major contributor to the formation of ozone in the troposphere and to acid deposition.

Nitrogen-flushed

Nominal Weight – The listed basis weight for specifying, ordering, and billing paper. Nominal weight may differ from actual basis weight. It is important to take actual basis weight into account when ordering a particular product in order to ensure that the customer receives the intended quantity of paper. Unless otherwise stipulated by the mill and customer, a tolerance of +/- 5% is allowed when calculating the nominal weight. See also Weight Tolerance.

Non-impact Printer – A printing device that creates letters or images on a substrate without striking it, e.g., photocopiers, laser printers, and ink jet printers.

Non-recyclable waste

Nonylphenol – An industrial chemical which interacts with human hormones and produces cancer. Its synonyms are p-nonylphenol,4-nonylphenol, CHO. Nonyphenoles were found in mineral waters due to migration from the plastic seal of the caps of bottles. Another source of nonylphenol in food are the nonylphenolethoxylate which are used in the production of plastics for wrappings and packagings of food. Nonylphenolethoxylate act as emulsifier and stabilizer in plasticizers for packaging. Nonyphenoles are breakdown products of norylphenolethoxylate detergents used in household and industrial cleaning products, which contaminate food. Their contact with foods leads to the contamination with nonyphenoles. The estimated human intake of nonylphenoles is 7.5 microgram a day.

No-spill spout pouch

NSSC pulp – Neutral sulphite semi-chemical pulp. Produced by slight cooking followed by de-fibration in a disc refiner.

Nylon – Polyamide resins, with very high melting points, excellent clarity and stiffness. Two types are used for films: nylon-6 and nylon-66. The latter has much higher melt temperature, thus better temperature resistance, but the former is easier to process, and it is cheaper. Both have good oxygen and aroma barrier properties, but they are poor barriers to water vapour. Also, nylon films can be cast (see CAN), or oriented, (see BON).
