Glass – The best packaging is glass because of its chemical stability. Industry tries to change glass by one-way packages made of glass because of price and weight. Glass is one hundred percent barrier against oxygen. Glass however can break. The small splinters being undetected present a great hazard to consumers. Glass is inert. There is no migration of components of the plastics to the food. There is no danger of intake of plastic components and other chemicals and there are no alterations of taste caused by these substances. Glass is a perfect barrier to atmospheric oxygen, avoiding rancidness, changes of colour. Glass bottles are reused about 45 times.

Glassine – A super-calendered, smooth, dense, transparent or semi-transparent paper manufactured primarily from chemical wood pulps. It is grease resistant and when waxed, lacquered or laminated is highly impervious to the transmission of moisture vapour. It is used extensively as a protective carton liner or inner bag for food and many other products.

Glazing – Calendering for more glossy and smoother surface and for even thickness.
Gloss – (1) Gloss results from the specular refection of light. Gloss can be measured at various angles of illumination. More gloss on the surface actually lessens the brightness of the sheet underneath as well as limiting the readability of printed copy. The gloss of the base sheet is different from the gloss of the printed sheet because of the reflective qualities of the ink. (2) The term used to express shine, sheen or lustre of the surface of boxboard or cartons. It varies according to the nature of the board stock itself, or may be imparted to the board or carton blank by coating, printing, or laminating.
Glow-in-the-dark labels –
Gluability – Tests which determine whether glue will set quickly when applied and if it bonds for the life of a carton. Gluability is affected by surface strength, clay coating strength, and speed of water absorption.
Glue – A commonly used synonym for the word adhesive. The term should actually apply only to those gelatinous adhesives extracted from the bones, skin, etc., of animals and fish by hot water.
Glue Flap – Structural element of a folding carton blank used to adhesively secure one panel to another.
Gluing – The operation of applying an adhesive substance to the surface of a material which causes it to bond or adhere to another.
GPPS – general-purpose polystyrene.
Grab-N-Go pouches – grab-and-go package.

Grain – The longitudinal arrangement of the fibres in paper or paperboard which results as they settle in the direction parallel with the travel of the paper or board machine. Direction of the grain is important in carton design because greater tearing strength exists across the grain, and greater tensile strength in grain direction. Grain is more pronounced in paperboard made on a cylinder machine than on paperboard made on a fourdrinier machine.
Grain Direction – (1) In papermaking, the alignment of fibres is predominantly in the direction of the web travel of the paper machine. (2) In printing, paper is said to be “grain-long” if the grain direction parallels the long dimension of the sheet. The paper is referred to as “grain-short” if it parallels the short dimension of the sheet.
Grammage – Weight in grams of one square metre (g/m2) of paper or board; also basis weight (US)

Gravure – An intaglio printing process in which minute depressions, sometimes called cells, that form the image area, are engraved or etched below the non-image area in the surface of the printing cylinder. The cylinder is immersed in ink, and the excess ink is scraped off by a blade. When paper or another substrate comes in contact with the printing cylinder, ink is transferred. Excellent for long runs of high quality or which need heavy ink or coating deposits. See also Rotogravure.
Gravure Printing – (1) This printing medium is the transfer of ink from an etched cylinder such as a sunken surface to the substrate, eg. paper/film/foil. The equipment is a multi-station (up to nine) printing machine to print and/or coat up to eight colours on to a fast-moving web of material. (2) (Rotogravure) An intaglio printing process using cylinders on which an image is etched in the form of a series of cells. These cells are filled with ink and the excess removed by means of a doctor blade. Ink from the wells is transferred by the rotary action of the press to the board in either sheet or web form.
Greaseproof Board – Paperboard which has been treated or laminated to provide resistance to the penetration of greasy or oily substances. Treatment may include such coatings as casein, lacquer, hot melt polyvinyl, resin or silicate. Glassine and other greaseproof papers may be laminated to board to provide this quality.
Green packaging – Biomaterials include corn, potatoes, sugar, tapioca, palm-oil by-products and wood pulp, among others.
Greenhouse Effect – The ability to keep the air temperature within the greenhouse construction higher than outside temperature especially during night time and in cooler growing climates.

Grippers – The metal fingers that clamp onto the edge of the paperboard and control its flow through the press.
Groundwood pulp – Mechanical pulp produced by grinding wood against a grindstone.

Gumming – Coating of paper or board with an adhesive, which becomes sticky when wet.
Gurley Porosity – The time required for a specific volume of air (2.5 cc to 30 cc) at a constant pressure of 12.33 inches W.C. to flow through a standard area of the material being tested. The measurement is performed on a Gurley high pressure denso-meter.
Gusset – The folded inward portion of a flexible bag.
Gusseted bag – The gussets are at the sides of the bag. Gusseted bags are available as – Centre seal gusseted bags, Side seal gusseted bags, Concealed seal gusseted bag, and a Gusseted bag with zipper. The quad bag is also a variety of the gusseted bag.
Gusseted bags with zipper – A gusseted bag with zipper is a quad bag where a zipper has been inserted at the top of the bag. The side gussets are glued together around the zipper, making airtight resealing of the bag simple for the customer. The bags are filled and sealed at the bottom, so the small zipper opening does not make filling them hard.
